Esh Pita Bar
Studio Michiel Wijnen - Esh Pita Bar, Amsterdam, 2023
Esh is a lively city hotspot , an authentic pita and pizza bar with a laid-back atmosphere and the energy of exciting quality street food.
Born from Martinot and expanded into the neighbouring building, the project connects two spaces through new structural openings and a steel construction, creating one lively and functional whole. Studio Michiel Wijnen was involved in the concept, layout, colour palette and material direction, shaping a space that feels warm, accessible and naturally layered urban in spirit, informal in atmosphere and rooted in Eastern Mediterranean hospitality.
By removing the former front extensions, the original facade with its arched windows was restored, giving the building back its character and creating a larger terrace. Striped sun awnings add charm and a breezy inside-outside quality, while the overall atmosphere remains open and inviting, a place for everyone, from families and regulars to well-known faces from the city.
Mediterranean Vibrancy
At the back of Esh, the open kitchen and food display bring the energy of front cooking into the space.
Framed by two market-stall-like openings with small awnings in a vivid mint-jade green, the kitchen puts the food at the centre of the experience. Richly piled ingredients, colourful textures and the rhythm of fresh pita making create a generous and vibrant backdrop, honest, abundant and full of appetite.
The result is a lively expression of Eastern Mediterranean street food culture: accessible, colourful and slightly raw, with the warmth of a neighbourhood favourite and the energy of an urban food hotspot.
